Mattoon prepares for Bamca arrival

Bamca, the Mexican grill that took Charleston by storm, is planning an expansion to Mattoon and a new name for its original location.
Restaurant owners and brothers Javier and Pedro Carrillo opened their doors in November 2013. Now, the brothers will be splitting ownership of the restaurants. Bamca will come to Mattoon, while Charleston’s Bamca will be renamed Mi Casa Tu Casa.
Lake Land College student and Mattoon resident Mikayla Willoughby said that she’s excited for her favorite Mexican restaurant to be even closer.
“My first reaction was excitement, because I frequent Bamca. I go at least once a week, usually on Fridays,” Willoughby said.
Willoughby said that Bamca is set apart from other chain restaurants by its quality.
“I feel like it’s a healthier option. It feels like it’s not as greasy, which has become the American norm,” Willoughby said. “You can get brown rice, and that feels healthier. It’s a break form the normal fast food in Mattoon.”
There isn’t a timeline for when the restaurant will open, but when it does, it will be located at 1009 Charleston Ave. East, in place of the recently closed Luigi’s Pizza.
