A-ca-what? Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of acappella. If this doesn’t ring a bell, let me shed some light. Acappella is a music that performs without any instruments. At first, that may sound a little boring. However, the rhythm isn’t lacking in acappella. What the artists are missing in instruments, they make up for in vocals. Specific members of the group perform certain sound effects with the hopes of duplicating a specific instrument. Sound familiar? Between the release of the Pitch Perfect movies and the popular NBC show The Sing Off, acappella has become a popular genre of music.
The Filharmonic is an all-male acappella group that first made its appearance on The Sing Off in 2013. Since making the semi-finals of The Sing Off, they have also appeared in ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ and toured with Linkin Park, Black Eyed Peas and Pentatonix. The nine Filipino-American men combine many elements of vocal artistry, mixing elements of hip-hop, beat boxing and classic 90’s nostalgia. What started as a chance meeting at a singing competition in college eventually became a fun, positive outlet for these young guys. As they continued to sing together, they realized they had a strong chemistry and strong ties to their Filipino culture.
You may be wondering what this has to do with you, or Lake Land students in general. Lake Land College will be expecting The Filharmonic in October. The guys will be performing live in the Lake Land College Luther Student Center on Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. For more information, call the Student Life Office at (217) 234-5270 or e-mail [email protected]
